Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is a video game based on “Xeonozoic Tales” comic book which is set in a post-apocalyptic future. Capcom, the makers of the game are known to have made some of the best beatemups of all time and this one is my favourite of them.
The way a player controls his character exceptional. The walk & run speed is perfectly balanced, while attack ranges make playing every of four characters a bit different. There’s a lot of variety to the moves you can pummel your opponents with. There are also two secrets, first: if you and one of your teammates stand at the same spot for couple of seconds you get a short invincibility. The second one is that you can get an M16 assault rifle drop from one of the destructibles. To this day I don’t know what needs to be done to get an M16. Maybe it’s completely random?
Both the sound effects and the music is great. The music helps the players immerse in a dystopian world while fitting the rhythm of the fights perfectly. The sound effects energize the player and are so good they will etch in one’s memory. The graphics are hand drawn and have stood the test of time really well. Both the characters and backgrounds look very good, while everything’s easy enough to distinguish in chaotic moments.
If there’s a way to improve the game, it’s surely to make it longer – but that’s hard to expect from an arcade game.
